International Workshop „Resilience in Times of Multiple Crises“, BIFAS/ UBT Humboldt Centre of Excellence, June 2026

Amid intersecting crises – climate change, pandemics, energy transitions, political polarization, and deepening social fragmentation – resilience has emerged as a key framework for understanding societal adaptation and guiding policy responses. Initially rooted in material, psychological, and ecological sciences, the concept has since evolved into an interdisciplinary “boundary object” and a widely circulating “travelling concept”, shaping scientific discourse, political agendas, and everyday narratives alike. Yet its normative commitments, cultural meanings, and experiential dimensions remain insufficiently theorized. Addressing this lacuna, the workshop convenes international scholars to rethink resilience as a multidimensional socio-cultural process. It seeks to connect empirical conditions and infrastructural capacities with values, imaginaries, and lived experience. Drawing on perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities, the workshop advances an understanding of resilience not merely as adaptive capacity, but as an ethically grounded mode of living meaningfully with uncertainty.
